Test Maturity Model integration (TMMi®): Objective-Driven Test Process Improvement or CMMI for the Testing World
Project Management has PMI, software development has CMMi, and now testing joins the team with the Test Maturity Model integration (TMMi ®). While both PMI and CMMi address testing under “quality,” they don’t go very deep.
As we have seen through industry trends around Agile, Lean and DevOps, quality does not start at the “Test Phase” but rather at the requirement phase. Continual improvement is part and parcel to building quality organizations that are ready to take on challenges rather than just hoping for the best. TMMi provides clarity on an organization’s test process maturity and targets where the organization wants to get to.
Originally developed in Ireland in 2007 by the TMMi Foundation, the TMMi concept has been adopted by many by many global software companies. This model is the best thing to happen to Software Development since someone said, “we really should test this code.” This may be an overstatement, but how many improvement projects or methodologies focus on Test as a discipline with standard metrics to gauge what areas need attention to gain maturity?
As CMMi does for software development, the TMMi Model separates testing into five Maturity Levels (Initial, Managed, Defined, Measured, and Optimized). Most organizations start at Initial and need to take deliberate, measured steps to reach Optimized.
Our presentation has two main goals:
Paul Royer is a PMI-certified Project Management Professional with 25+ years PM experience and specialties in risk management and quality assurance. He has successfully led external quality assurance/risk assessment engagements for public and corporate entities in Washington, Oregon, California, Missouri and Canada.
This summer, Paul & Greg performed a test process assessment for a Canadian city using the Test Maturity Model integration (TMMi) framework. Currently, Paul is performing a QA engagement for the Washington State Health Care Authority for their School Employee Benefit Board (SEBB) PAY1 Integration Project. Prior to that, he was PM Administrator for the Enterprise PMO at the Washington Health Benefit Exchange (WAHBE) Healthplanfinder (HPF) project.
In addition, for the last twenty years, Paul has concentrated on the methodological aspects of project risk management, publishing several papers with the PMI. In October 2001, Management Concepts, Inc published his book, Project Risk Management: A Proactive Approach which was subsequently translated into Japanese and Chinese. In 2015, Paul published his second book on project Risk Management: Project Health Assessment, CRC Press – Taylor & Francis Group.
Greg Grivas is also a PMP and has experience in Project Management, IT Operations, QA, Test Management and Organizational Change Management. Currently, Greg is leading organizational software testing assessments in Canada and Washington utilizing the TMMi methodology framework.
Prior to that, he led the software testing for the first State based Health Benefit Exchange in the State of Washington, allowing over 2 million citizens the ability to apply and obtain health Insurance coverage. Greg continued with the Health Benefit Exchange building out the IT Operations Org, the Quality Assurance team and the Problem Management Group.
In addition, Greg worked for Microsoft for 10 years and state Government for 10 years. Greg now provides Quality Assurance assessments and road mapping for organizations seeking to improve their practices and increase organizational maturity.
Finally, Greg is an IPMA LeaderPath Alumni working with a large group of State CIO’s, Directors and Managers. He and his team presented on what the State of Washington needs to focus on to build leaders for the future.
