Monthly Chapter Meeting (Virtual)

Business Acumen

Brief Abstract of the Topic:

Quantum technologies are on the horizon and promise to be the next big thing. If quantum technologies fall into the wrong hands, we may face encryptogeddon. Dr. Skulmoski outlines the program of quantum cybersecurity projects PMOs and technology departments are planning.

Speaker Bio:

Greg Skulmoski is an award-winning project manager, having led projects in Australia, the Middle East, and Canada. Greg’s innovative use of project management tools and processes won the CISO 2017 Middle East Security Award. Later, Greg was one of the project managers for the Smartphone-Connected Pacemaker Devices program that placed third in Cleveland Clinic’s Top 10 Medical Innovations for 2021. Greg was also one of the authors (Update Committee) of the Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge (2000) from the Project Management Institute.

Dr. Skulmoski currently teaches risk management and project innovation management at Bond University in the Faculty of Society and Design in Australia. Greg’s critically acclaimed book – Shields Up: Cybersecurity Project Management brings together research and practice into a concise guide to cybersecurity projects. Greg and Chris Walker wrote Cybersecurity Readiness: A Project Management Approach to Training (2023). Dr. Skulmoski and Dr. Ashkan Memari wrote Quantum Cybersecurity: A Transition Plan (in press, 2024 Q4).

Learn More:

The United Nations proclaimed 2025 the International Year of Quantum Science and Technologies. Quantum technologies promise to cure diseases, create new materials, and optimize supply chains and government processes. However, quantum technologies used by hackers give them the keys to anything they want: nuclear codes, health, and financial information, and even encrypted Christmas lists!

Dr. Skulmoski outlines the business, IT, and cybersecurity strategies organizations can implement to prepare, adopt, and progress with quantum technologies. Greg provides an overview of the projects in the quantum cybersecurity program: quantum awareness, minimum cybersecurity foundation, project and service management optimization, cryptographic agility, quantum business projects, and post-quantum cryptographic migrations. A decade of projects!

In Greg’s presentation, attendees will be introduced to a project management approach combining and tailoring standards and frameworks to quantum technology projects. The PMBOK®Guide, NIST Cybersecurity Framework, ITIL Service Management, and ISO standards and frameworks are aligned into a project delivery approach applicable to most quantum technology projects most of the time.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Learn the three types of quantum strategies organizations can develop to prepare for quantum computing.
  2. Discover how complex projects and programs benefit from aligning with best practices found in standards and frameworks.
  3. Find out about the key quantum cybersecurity projects organizations have implemented.
